Use bricks for a garden hedge

A homeowner can hedge their garden using leftover bricks by making a study garden hedge or border.

Andrew Mpenja, a landscaper says one can simply stack the bricks together in a design of their choice and fill the gaps with soil.

They can also be used as a planter.

“This border helps to protect the garden from invaders and holds back the soil as well,” he says.

However, if you choose to stack the bricks together, ensure they are baked well to withstand the harsh weather.

Build paths and walkways

Joshua Twinomurinzi, a gardener says bricks are also an excellent material for garden paths and walkways.

These are beautiful additions to any garden; big or small. Just like with the hedge, you can choose to build or simply arrange the bricks in a straight line or squares depending on your landscape, brick type and the patterns you want to achieve.

“Feel free to mix them with other materials like pebbles and flagstones to create a design,” he opines.

Bricks for retaining walls and raised beds

Retaining walls help to hold back the earth and decorate the compound as well.

In most of his projects, Mpenja uses bricks to build retaining walls to give homes and commercial projects some curb appeal.

Thereafter, he decorates the wall with stones to enhance outdoor beauty.

Create flooring for outdoor seating areas

Twinomurinzi says bricks can also be used to make outdoor flooring for seating areas like a patio. Simply lay out a larger area of bricks on the ground to form a patio.

Again, you could create a decorative feature by laying out the bricks in different patterns. Relatedly, brick-flooring is also good for pergolas and gazebos. However, ensure they are strong enough to withstand extreme conditions.

Make garden steps, birdbaths and planters

Hollow bricks can make unique planters. Lay them along a path or use them to make a garden border and plant flowers.

You can also plant vegetables like spinach, sukuma wiki, kale and spices. They will feed the family and enhance your home’s beauty as well.

Outdoor kitchen, benches and fire pits

Old bricks can also be used to build outdoor kitchen counters and bars. These will allow you to spend more time outdoors; relaxing and hosting visitors.

Mpenja says such a kitchen is a great addition to a home.

Build shades and water features

Depending on how big the leftover pile of bricks is, you can build garden sheds for storage, a greenhouse, a resting shade or a kid’s playhouse.

Ensure to spruce it up to add to the beauty of the outdoors. Elsewhere, you could interestingly place the bricks to create a water feature such as a fountain.
