Be resilient, corporates advised

Just as Johnnie Walker has evolved and endured over two centuries, it reminded us all that we too can find strength and inspiration in our journeys.

The atmosphere at Serena Hotel last Friday (October 11) buzzed with energy as guests savoured the rich, nuanced flavours of Johnnie Walker whiskies -Black Label, Red Label, and a touch of tequila.

Each sip was visibly provoking smiles and appreciative murmurs. Shortly after arrival, the guests were expertly guided by Joy Tumwizera, a Sales Executive at Uganda Breweries Limited, on a journey into whisky sipping and how it came to be.

This was during the Stanbic Bank Corporate clients’ dinner.

“To fully experience the benefits of whisky, it’s important to have a solid foundation in your stomach,” Tumwizera began.

“That is why your glass comes with slices of pineapple, lemon, and cucumber. Let each sip linger on your tongue before it glides down the throat. It is a time-honoured tradition behind every drop.”

Silence transpired as throats waited for delivery and eyes rolled. Soft music was lazily sizzling out of cancelled sources.

With storytelling flair, Tumwizera shared a brief but compelling history of Johnnie Walker. The tale began in 1820, with a humble grocer from Kilmarnock, Scotland, named John Walker, and his son, Alexander Walker I, who expanded the family business into a global success.

After John Walker I passed away in 1819, his young son, John Walker II, took over the reins of the family business at just 15 years old.

With the help of his wife, Elizabeth, they began blending and brewing Kilmarnock Whisky, a product that would soon gain widespread acclaim. The legacy was carried forward by their son, Alexander, who propelled the business to new heights.

“This story is about more than just whisky,” Tumwizera said, his voice reflecting the passion of the tale.

“It’s about resilience-braving the odds and overcoming adversity. Like many great businesses, it started small and grew into a global icon.”

The evening’s master of ceremonies, Mich Egwang, sparked a thought-provoking conversation by challenging the audience: “Beyond the Madhvani and Mehta sugar factories, can you name three businesses in Uganda that have outlived their founders?”

After a brief pause, he answered his question. “I know Jesa Milk, and Nice Plastics, founded by the late James Mulwana, can you name other examples of businesses that have stood the test of time in Uganda?”

This Stanbic Corporate client’s dinner, it dawned on me, was more than just a whisky tasting - it was a celebration of resilience in all forms. The evening featured live jazz performances by Tshaka Mayanja, poetry recitals, and engaging discussions on how to make fat fortunes and navigate the challenges of modern life.

The themes were how to leave a legacy after one’s demise, how to multiply the fortune one has and prepare for the next generation to have a soft landing. It was a tribute to resilience, legacy, and the enduring power of perseverance. Just as Johnnie Walker has evolved and endured over two centuries, it reminded us all that we too can find strength and inspiration in our journeys.
