Entertainers, family members and fans attended an event to honour the late  actor/politician Kato Lubwama at Bat Valley Theatre in Kampala on June 14, 2024.

Kato, who passed away  due to heart complications on June 7, 2023, left an impact on the arts industry with his songs and  dramas. He was a member of Bakayimbira Dramactors.

Many of his songs and dramas, including  Bank Yebyama and Abantu Bazibu, were performed at the event dubbed Kato Lubwama: A Forever Legacy.

City pastor Aloysius Bugingo led prayers at the event, attended by notable people such as MP Muhammad Nsereko, singers Mesach Semakula, Godfrey Lutaaya, Ronald Mayinja and Rebecca Jingo, as well as actors Abbey Mukiibi, Charles Ssenkubuge, Andrew Benon Kibuuka and Sam Bagenda.

In an interview, Nsereko  disclosed plans to construct a  theatre to replace Bat Valley Threatre, saying it was Kato's  dream to make Ugandan theatre reach international levels.

He offered his support towards the venture.

In an interview with Conrad Lubwama, son of the late Kato, he thanked Uganda Communications Commission for giving his father an award and also unveiled plans to hold Kato Lubwama National Awards in November.

He said the awards are meant to inspire the young generation in the creative industry.

Conrad said the reason why they made the memorial celebrations on June 14, not  June 7, the day Kato passed on,  was because "we spent the week celebrating him until  June 14."

"We started with visiting his grave in Nkozi, Mpigi district," Conrad said.
