The renowned weekly city poetry session, Kwivuga, known for captivating literature enthusiasts across various art spaces, is transcending its usual confines. It has set its sights on a grander spectacle – a concert of a kind - to be held at the Kampala Serena Hotel on December 11, 2023.
Nunu Umuringa Butare, the proprietor of Kwivuga, told New Vision that venturing into a larger event, uncommon in the literary world, serves as an eye-opener for the poetry and spoken word sub-industry. It aims to demonstrate that their potential extends beyond small art spaces and distant venues to prestigious locales where the elite gather.
"My goal is to illustrate to poets, spoken word artists, and others in the same category that their capabilities aren't confined to small art spaces and remote venues but can expand to more significant and esteemed locations within the elite world," she explained.
Named The Odyssey, this edition of the session aims to narrate the journey of Kwivuga since its inception in 2012 and to paint a picture of its future.
Nunu revealed that the edition will showcase seasoned figures in poetry and spoken word who have been integral to the journey.
"As the name suggests, The Odyssey recounts my journey over the years. All the performers are those who started with me 11 years ago, and together, we have built this remarkable platform that has given rise to hundreds of poets, spoken word artists, and others," she stated.
This edition will be headlined by notable figures in the music and poetry realms, including Babaluku, Kagai Ngobi, Ruyonga, Lilian Mbabazi, The Mith, Roshan Kamali, Jason Ntaro, Mark Gordon and Diana Mpyisi.
Kwivuga first made waves in social circles in 2012, captivating Ugandan party-goers with poetry, spoken word, and comedy every last Thursday of the month.
After a hiatus due to COVID-19, the session made a triumphant return this year, delighting revelers in July and September with shows at The Krystal Bugolobi and Motiv in Kampala, respectively.
