Movable kitchen cabinets are versatile and practical. Christopher Ssenono, a furniture designer, says he started making them in 2022, when a client approached him for a portable kitchen cabinet with a sink space and for a gas cooker.
Ssenono drew several sketches of movable kitchen cabinets and produced a customised kitchen cabinet which the client wanted.
He designs unique movable kitchen cabinets in various styles to match his clients’ needs. The workshop is situated in Lugala zone, a city suburb of Kampala.
Materials used
Ssenono uses laminated, block, plywood and carbon rock boards, which are fire and water resistant.
He also uses silicate masonry paint, which is durable and resistant to moisture and stains.
Crafting
There are several factors Ssenono considers before designing a movable kitchen cabinet. Some clients prefer small cabinets to fit small spaces, while others like large ones with extra storage space for essentials.
Movable kitchen cabinets are planned as store sinks with cabinets and gas cooker spaces, which have a space where users can store their camp cylinders or gas tables. The cabinet is also designed with built-in shelves, bespoke cabinets and drawers to allow the user to keep the kitchen clutter-free.
Jane Najjumba, a resident of Nansana in Wakiso district, says the cabinet is functional because it can be easily moved to create more space when needed, such as when cleaning or shifting to another room.
He also adds that it fits into smaller spaces without obstructing movements. It can also be easily rolled into another room, especially when hosting guests.
According to Ssenono, the kitchen cabinets are affordable because they are designed with materials that are cost-effective for adding storage and functionality to the kitchen, such as plywood, laminated, block and carbon rock boards that can be used to create sturdy and durable cabinets.
These cabinets can be easily relocated because they have robust wheels or casters that can support their weight.
They can pass through doorways or around corners in the kitchen. They are ideal for small spaces, apartments and outdoor kitchens. This setup can also provide casual dining space without the commitment and expense of installing permanent fixtures.
Maintenance tips
Ssenono says although they are water resistant, they should not be placed in outdoor spaces for a long time or exposed to moisture. Furthermore, avoid exposing the cabinet to the fire too much.
