Ali Mutuka, the president of Film Club Uganda, has recently disclosed that, among all the scenes ideal for shooting, romantic scenes give him goosebumps, particularly the part where he has to kiss a fellow actor.
Despite acknowledging that, in that moment, it's the characters sharing the kiss, he emphasised the reality that actors are, indeed, engaged in a kiss, making it challenging.
"People may think love scenes are fascinating and that those on set are enjoying, but it's the worst," Mutuka said.
Loukman Ali, a movie director and cinematographer, echoed Mutuka's sentiments, referring to it as a "hard drop."
He believes that it's difficult for the public to comprehend unless they've experienced it themselves.
Award-winning actress Nana Kagga voiced her discontent with the way Ugandan actors handle on-screen kisses.
She said once the cameras start rolling, an actor often aggressively invades the other's oral space, turning the experience into a frustrating moment.
"In Uganda, actors don't even know how to kiss. As soon as the director says action, the actor goes straight to sucking your tongue, as if to swallow it," Nana stated.
The perception of kissing scenes seems to vary based on the actors and the roles they portray.
In August 2023, actor Housen Mushema shared that kissing fellow actor Nisha Kalema in the movie Veronica's Wish was an enjoyable experience. Their on-screen chemistry was so convincing that the public started believing they were real-life lovers.
During an appearance on Urban TV's FanPlus show in July 2023, actress and commercial model Maureen Nankya expressed disbelief that she was the one who kissed three different male cast members on the same set — an experience she still recalls as insane.
This intriguing topic, , where Loukman Ali, Ali Mutaka, and Nana Kagga will share their opinions, will be further explored on this week's Salon Talk, hosted by Sovaria Hughes on Urban TV on Sunday at 8:15pm.
