In the struggle for length retention and healthy hair, trimming is the last thing one needs to hear. Ironically, it is a key enhancer of hair growth.

Henry Nsamba, a professional hairdresser, says that trimming is different from shaving.

" Most people mix these two. But a trim does not mean closely shaving the hair. You simply remove dead ends, and it is a reasonable length, and it is healthy for both chemically treated and natural hair," he says.

Trimming gives space for healthy hair to grow because the damaged bits are removed. Nsamba says split ends are a common reason to trim.

"The split end ruins the entire shaft and causes breakage." "So if you notice you have them, do a trim," he advises.

Another sign is if the ends have lots of tangles and knots. He says this often happens with the curly patterns of natural hair, but when it is excessive, it is time to trim.

"If your hair is breaking mostly at the ends, and if you are not noticing any length, that is a sign that it needs a trim," he adds.

However, it is not necessary to trim if your ends are often protected or tucked in protective styles because they are kept intact.

He also cautions against trimming often. "There is no need to trim monthly, for example, because then you will never realize any length retention. "Do it when the hair indicates a need," he says.
