In a vibrant celebration of craftsmanship, creativity, and cultural heritage, Ugandans marked World Tailors Day at the Lugogo UMA Show Grounds last Friday.
Organised by the Uganda Tailors Association (UTA), the event brought together students, professionals, and fashion enthusiasts to honor the art of tailoring under the theme Tailoring Across Cultures.
One of the highlights of the day was the highly anticipated fashion show, which showcased the fusion of traditional Ugandan garments with modern fashion trends. The runway featured a diverse array of designs that celebrated Uganda’s rich cultural heritage, incorporating local fabrics such as barkcloth and kitenge, alongside global influences. From formal wear to traditional ceremonial attire, the fashion show not only entertained but also educated attendees on the cultural significance of tailoring.
Beyond the runway, the event featured an exhibition where tailors displayed their work, explaining the techniques, fabrics, and inspiration behind each design. This interactive space allowed visitors to appreciate the skill and artistry involved in tailoring.
The day also provided valuable networking opportunities, bringing together fashion designers, textile producers, suppliers, and other industry stakeholders. A key feature was the stakeholder panel discussion, where industry experts and thought leaders shared insights on topics such as sustainable fashion, the impact of globalization on local tailoring, and the importance of preserving traditional techniques while embracing emerging technologies.
Another standout element was the series of sewing and tailoring competitions. Participants were challenged to create garments that blended traditional Ugandan elements with modern tailoring techniques. Despite the challenges of a trade often criticized for delayed deliveries, many competitors demonstrated their ability to work under pressure, producing beautifully designed and meticulously constructed pieces.
“While fashion designers create the conceptual design of the clothing, stylists work on how those designs are presented. As tailors, our role is to bring those designs to life, ensuring every stitch, cut, and fitting reflects the designer’s vision while incorporating the unique skills we’ve honed over the years. Tailoring is where creative ideas meet technical skill,” said Kimuli, one of the competitors.
The event underscored the importance of tailoring as both an art and a craft, celebrating its role in preserving cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary trends.
