SURREY - The UK Wife Carrying Race held in Dorking, Surrey last Sunday (March 16), saw last year's champions Stuart Johnson and Hattie Cronin claim a second victory. Speaking after the race, Stuart said "the lactic starts kicking in" whilst running uphill but described the return downhill as "free running" with "a bit of extra weight". His wife Hattie said the water thrown by spectators was "very chilly...I definitely need to go change my trousers!"
Stuart mentioned he had been doing physio for two-and-a-half months ahead of the race and focused on strengthening his legs, contrasting preparation for last year's race where they "trained in the park a lot", with Hattie adding they "got a few odd looks". As the first-place finishers, they won a barrel of local ale worth £150 (sh713,000), and £250 (sh1.2 million) towards their expenses in representing Britain in the World Wife Carrying Championships, which is being held in Finland in July.
