KAMPALA - John Senyonga, a Primary Five pupil from Ndejje Kibuttika Primary School, Wakiso district, walked away with sh500,000 in a dancing competition organised by Vision Group’s Toto Christmas Festival that took place at Millennium Grounds, Wakiso district.
Maureen Nakatudde chatted with him about his experience.
Your dancing was above the rest
Thank you very much for the compliment.
Did you rehearse before coming for the competition?
No, I did not prepare, but I belong to a Lugaza Kids Dancers’ group located in Kibuutika, Ndejje. I joined the group two and a half years ago because of the great passion I have for dancing. I think being in the group has helped refine my skills and make me better in the competition.
Did you expect to win?
No, I never expected it.
Given your proficiency in dancing, why didn’t you think?
I feared that people would not support me. However, I was pleasantly surprised that each time they inquired about whether I should continue dancing after a round, their affirmative response was consistently stronger. This instilled in me the courage and confidence to exert more effort during the competition.
Did you come from home with the intention to participate in the dancing competition?
No, I came for fun, but when I learned about the dancing competition, I made the decision to participate.
How did you join the contest?
I requested my mother give me sh2,000 to buy today’s newspaper so that I can get the ticket to enter into the draw. Fortunately, she gave it to me, and I was able to join the competition.
What do you think about your competitors?
They were all outstanding dancers. Unfortunately, among the four finalists, I was the only boy there. I wish more boys participated. Nevertheless, the girls performed exceptionally well. Rehema Namubiru, the second winner in the dancing competition, was truly exceptional.
Thank God she walked away with sh300,000. The third runner-up, Maria Olivia, scooped sh200,000. Even though Patience Achieng never won any money, she took home a box of Sumz snacks and goodies from Indomie, which included a water bottle and a container. But she was also very good.
Will you pursue dancing as a career in the future?
My dream is to become an engineer, but if time allows, I will do some dancing on the side.
What do you do in your free time?
I like dancing and listening to music.
Can you mention your favourite food?
I will never get tired of eating rice and beans.
