Just like humans need shelter, dogs too need good housing to be healthy and happy.
Isa Lutebemberwa, a veterinary doctor, points out the factors to consider before buying a house or kennel for your dog(s).
He says size and space matters. In other words, the kennel should be spacious enough for the dog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. Ensure it is appropriately sized for the dog's breed and it should allow for growth if the dog is young.
Besides, comfort is also vital and as such, the kennel should have comfortable bedding that is easy to clean. It should also protect it from hard or uncomfortable surfaces.
Dickson Tayebwa, a vet, also cautions against buying a poorly built kennel that has no spaces because, the dog has to see and interact with people outside. This reduces boredom hence mitigating behavioral issues during confinement.
More to that, ensure the kennel is well ventilated and insulated to protect it against extreme temperatures. In cold weather, you can also provide blankets or insulated pads to keep the dog warm. Good ventilation slats prevent overheating and instead, provide fresh air supply. Remember, good ventilation is crucial for the dog's health.
The housing should be weatherproof to protect the dog against rain, wind, and the sun. Ensure to elevate it from the ground to prevent flooding and dampness. During hot weather, ensure there is adequate shade and ventilation to keep the dog cool.
Additionally, use durable, non-toxic materials that are safe for dogs. Avoid materials that can splinter or break easily in case the dog bites them. Also, check for sharp edges or small parts that the dog could chew and swallow.
There is more; choose housing that is easy to clean and maintain. Removable roofs or doors can make cleaning more convenient. Regularly clean the housing to prevent the buildup of dirt, bacteria, and pests.
Portability and security are also important. If you need to move the kennel frequently, consider lightweight and portable options. Also, ensure it is secure against potential predators such as snakes and the kennel should be strong enough to prevent the dog from escaping.
