If you keep decluttering and organising your living spaces, but clutter keeps eating up your home, then it’s high time you reflected on your habits.

Suzan Nalwoga, a counselling psychologist, says, “Living in a cluttered environment can affect one’s mental health. The clutter can make you feel confined, overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious,” she says.

According to her, habits contribute greatly to the way we live. For example, if you are an impulsive shopper and
you keep buying things without getting rid of others before you know it, your home will be full.

Also, those with sentimental attachment to items will clutter up their spaces because they never want to let go of things, even if they don’t need them. This usually happens on gifted items and those they bought expensively.

You will hear excuses like, “This furniture was gifted to me by my parents 20 years ago, and it evokes special memories. There is no way I can detach myself from it.”Nalwoga says, “Learn to let go. That way, you will
get rid of all the things you no longer need and those you take long to use. It’s hard but possible. Just take a step and don’t look back.”

Easy ways to declutter

Decluttering can be overwhelming, but the good news is this activity has no rules. Just do it your way. Draw up a plan that works for you and conquer the clutter at your convenience.

Christine Tendo, an interior decorator suggests starting with wall hangings, newspapers, magazines, and children’s books.

Look at your walls

If they are filled with art pieces and family photos, consider sorting that visual clutter. Decide what to take down or replace.

For instance, if your bedroom wall has four or more paintings, replace them with one big one. You will immediately appreciate the difference.

Do the same in the living room. Replace those many small photos with one or two big ones. You can also create a picture wall and hang them there, but decoratively.

Books

Brenda Ndyanabo, another interior organiser, says, “Books are good décor pieces, but they can also be a source of clutter.” For that, she says,

“Keep only those you need and buy those you will read and give away afterwards.”
