RWENZORI - For many residents of the Rwenzori sub-region, surgical complications have been a persistent struggle, often worsened by limited access to affordable healthcare.

To address this challenge, the Cute Project Onlus from Italy, in partnership with Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, has organised a ten-day free reconstructive plastic surgery camp to provide much-needed treatment.

The initiative, which began on Tuesday, aims to treat a variety of conditions, including scars, swellings, and other related ailments.

Dr Lauben Kyomukama, the general surgeon and head of the surgery department at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, highlighted the significance of the camp for the region.

"The aim of this camp is to provide free treatment for patients suffering from scars, swellings, and other reconstructive needs. It’s an opportunity for many individuals who would otherwise not afford such services to access high-quality medical care,” Kyomukama said.

He added that patients attending the camp will receive consultations and surgeries from experienced medical professionals, completely free of charge.

“The camp will continue for the next several days, with medical teams working tirelessly to provide much-needed surgeries and consultations to local patients. This collaborative effort is a shining example of how international partnerships can positively impact communities and improve healthcare services for the most vulnerable populations,” he said.

Daniele Bollero, the president of Cute Project Onlus and a plastic surgeon at CTO in Turin, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to helping those with scars and other medical conditions.

"We are proud to be part of this initiative again this year,” Bollero stated.

He noted that through Cute Project’s training efforts, over 1,200 patients have undergone surgery, reaching this milestone in May 2024 at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital.

“Over the years, Cute Project has also awarded a scholarship to Dr Kalanzi, Uganda’s first plastic surgeon, allowing him to train in Turin and become an active member of the association,” he said.

“There is a great need for reconstructive plastic surgery in the poorest African countries. There is no specialised training available, burn and trauma patients do not receive adequate care, leading to contracture scars and disabilities,” he said.
