In honour of World Oral Health Day, Unilever hosted celebrations at Kitante Primary School on Thursday under the theme “A Happy Mouth is... A Happy Mind!”. The event aimed to raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene as the foundation for overall health.
Anthony Esylai, Head of Creatives and Innovation at Unilever, explained that the celebration is part of a broader initiative to reach 400,000 children across Uganda this year. “Good oral hygiene must be taught from an early age,” he said.

Why start with schools?
“Children learn habits early. Teaching them to brush twice daily with a good toothpaste like Pepsodent, and visit dentists twice a year, will protect their health as they grow. At Unilever, we believe in brightening lives by promoting health education. A healthy mouth leads to a healthy body, and that in turn lights up one’s life," Esylai explained.
Dr Isaac Robert Kayondo, a dentist from Pretty Life Medical Center, warned that many children suffer from swollen gums (gingivitis) or bone infections (periodontitis) due to consuming too many sweets and not brushing properly.
He also pointed out that normal, healthy gums should be coral pink, and any redness or inflammation is a warning sign.
Dr Kayondo stressed that proper brushing is more than just scrubbing; it involves rinsing first, using the right amount of toothpaste, and brushing in gentle circular motions at a 45-degree angle to the gums.

How to brush properly
Dr Kayondo demonstrated the correct way to brush:
- Rinse your mouth first to remove food.
- Use a small amount of toothpaste.
- Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle.
- Brush gently in circles for 2-3 minutes.
“Don’t scrub hard — it hurts gums. Gentle circles clean better,” he advised.
Dr Kayondo urged parents to play an active role in their children’s dental care. “If you don’t help with the milk teeth now, the permanent teeth may suffer later on,” he warned.

Kitante Primary School pupils received gifts.
After the event, the pupils enjoyed an entertaining performance by the Pepsodent Dance Group. The lively music and dance routines added fun to the day, while interactive quizzes kept the children engaged.
Those who answered correctly were rewarded with an additional free tube of Pepsodent toothpaste.

Unilever extended its oral health campaign to five more schools, where dentists educated pupils on proper dental care.
