A seven-year-old girl has died after her mother allegedly forced her and her sibling to drink poison—an act said to be driven by anger and frustration.
This tragic incident has shaken the residents of Aloaki Village, Kangodo Parish in Kyere sub-county, Serere District.
It’s alleged that on Wednesday (April 09) night, 25-year-old Vivian Mary Akajo, who is pregnant and a mother of two, locked herself in the house with her children.
She reportedly gave them a poisonous substance and also consumed it herself, with the intention that all of them would die.
At the time of the incident, her husband, Samuel Ekonu, was not at home.
The deceased has been identified as Becky Amoding, a Primary two pupil at Guardian Angels Nursery and Primary School in Olupe, Kyere.
She was known for her active participation in church and was loved by many in the community.
Early this morning, neighbours woke up to the shocking news. Akajo and one of the children survived but were in critical condition and rushed to the hospital for emergency care.
John Otekede, who was the first to arrive at the scene, narrated that he found the home unusually quiet when he came by for his usual building work.
John Michael Elenyu, the LC1 Chairperson of Aloaki Village, condemned the incident.
He advised that it is always better to seek help or return to your parents’ home until emotions cool down, rather than taking a life.
The husband, 34-year-old Ekonu, confirmed that the couple had ongoing misunderstandings.
He explained that although they had previously resolved their issues, he recently took a second wife—something he believed could be managed peacefully. The incident happened while he was away visiting his second wife.
Ekonu also claimed that his wife had been receiving harmful advice from others, which worsened her behavior and led to disrespect in the home.
Some family and community members also expressed their shock and shared their views.
John Esadu, the LC3 Chairperson of Kyere sub-county, condemned the act, urging residents to seek peaceful resolutions to domestic issues.
Meanwhile, police officers who visited the scene have urged the community to avoid such harmful decisions. They encouraged people to seek support, report cases of domestic violence or criminal behaviour to authorities, and embrace peaceful conflict resolution.
