Gen. Don William Nabasa, the army's third infantry division commander, has handed over to Brig. Gen. Wilberforce Sserunkuma.

Sserunkuma, who has been Nabasa's deputy, was elevated to the role of the third infantry division commander in the recent changes made by the Commander in Chief Gen. Yoweri Museveni early this week.

The handover at the Officers’ Mess in Moroto Barracks was presided over by the Commander Land Forces, Lt. Gen. Muhanga Kayanja.

Nabasa assumes the role of Joint Staff Policy and Strategy (JS Policy & Strategy) at the defence ministry.

Nabasa replaced Brig. Gen. Joseph Balikudembe in May 2023, who was sent on a strategic study course.

Speaking at the handover, Kayanja said he was impressed by the relations between leaders and the security forces.

"I would like to ask the incoming leadership to strengthen the co-operation among leaders and the forces,” he said, adding that discipline is of utmost significance.

Kayanja said in the past, the UPDF was obsessed with allegations of selling people's cows but it is no longer the case.

He commended the leaders and the security forces for working together to ensure sustainable peace.

He said the country was on better track adding that there was nothing like rebels from Kisoro to Karamoja and Gulu to Mutukula adding that even we do not have the rebels.

Karamoja parliamentary caucus chairperson Rwemigio Achia said together, they identified the solution to some of the problems in Karamoja.

"Let’s thank the President for the energies he has placed in Karamoja,” he said, adding that the issue in Karamoja that led to chaos was the failure to respond to emergencies.

Achia emphasized the need to quickly respond to issues so that locals do not treat it as neglect or isolation.

He added that most commanders have failed in the region because they do not want to speak to leaders.

Karamoja affairs minister Peter Lokeris asked the incoming leaders to work together with the leaders in the region to sustain peace.

“This is what Karamoja needs, not isolation,” he noted, adding that they also want to see the wrongdoers punished.

He appealed to the new commanders to strengthen co-ordination to ensure the region is in total peace.

The handover was attended by local leaders, Members of Parliament, district commissioners and friends among others.
