A Kamuli district-based bodaboda rider has met his death while demanding shillings 3,000 from a passenger he had transported after Christmas Day.
Samuel Kagere, 40, a rider at the Balawoli-Kamuli Park stage, went to Leo Magemeso’s home in Kananage-Buyimbo zone, southern division of Kamuli municipality to demand the shillings 3,000.
Possessed with agitated indignation, Kagere who was suspected to be drunk, shouted in protest saying it was the third time he was demanding his money and vowed not to leave until he was paid.
According to neighbours, Kagere’s statement sparked off a serious quarrel that forced Magemeso to confront him, before they tussled in the middle of the courtyard.
It was during the fracas that Magemeso’s wife saw her husband losing the battle, prompting her to rush with a sharp knife to save him before stabbing Kagere’s head, letting out an endless stream of thick blood.
The fracas attracted neighbours and Good Samaritans, who rushed the victim to Kamuli General Hospital, where he was announced dead shortly.
Busoga North Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed the incident, adding that upon suspecting mob justice, the couple jumped onto a bodaboda and sought refuge at Kamuli Central Police Station before they were detained.
“We’re still investigating and comparing reports from eyewitnesses and neighbours who saw how the fight unfolded and the couple we have in custody,” Kasadha said.
Kamuli District Bodaboda Cyclists Association chairperson Aloysius Nyenje warned cyclists against taking intoxicants while ferrying passengers, adding that reports have indicated that the deceased, upon demanding the money, was working under the influence of alcohol.
