Christians in Uganda and around the world are set to begin the fasting season of Lent on Wednesday (March 5).
To get the 40-day Lenten season started, many faithful are expected to attend prayers on Ash Wednesday, during which prelates mark worshippers’ foreheads with ashes, as a symbol of mortality and penitence.
By extension, this signifies a commitment to turning away from sin and toward renewal.
Lent is traditionally a time for spiritual self-examination and personal growth for Christians.
It culminates with Holy Week leading up to Easter, which falls this year on April 20.
As emphasized by the Church, Christians will engage in prayer, fasting and almsgiving throughout Lent.
Believers are urged to renounce sinful behaviours and to seek forgiveness in their lives.
This process of renewal is meant to prepare the faithful for the joyous celebration of Easter.
Fasting during Lent is not just about abstaining from food but also about self-discipline and sacrifice. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Jesus and encourages believers to practice self-restraint in various aspects of life.
Additionally, almsgiving and acts of kindness are emphasised during Lent.
Christians are encouraged to help those in need, reinforcing the values of compassion and community service.
