The city mortuary under the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) management is set for renovation.

Acting KCCA executive director Frank Rusa says the exercise will last between six and eight-months.

Rusa made the revelations during the KCCA end-of-year media briefing at the KCCA offices on December 23, 2024.

According to him, the works on the infrastructure located at Mulago are estimated to cost shillings 500 million and that the works are to be undertaken by the army's engineering brigade.

Rusa noted that during the closure of the mortuary, the bodies will be shifted to Mulago Hospital mortuary to ensure the continuity of the provision of service.

Over 700 children rescued

Rusa also revealed that KCCA rescued over 700 children from the streets of Kampala and that out of these, 408 were integrated into government primary schools for compulsory education.

The children were placed in Lotome Girls Primary School, Lokodoidoi Primary School and Lodoi Primary School all in Napak district and they will remain in school even during holidays for mindset change.

The executive director revealed that after the recue, over 50 women were arrested and arraigned before the courts of law for using children to beg on the streets.

“These children were remanded and thereafter sentenced to community service which is a non-custodial sentence,” Rusa said.
