KAMPALA - The Church of Uganda (COU) has launched a nationwide fundraising drive to raise sh2.2b to organise what may be the most spiritually and symbolically significant Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebration.

Set for June 3 at Namugongo shrines, this year’s event will bring together Anglicans and Catholics in a rare act of unity, as thousands of pilgrims from Northern Uganda walk side by side in remembrance of the martyrs.

But this powerful show of faith needs the support of every Ugandan through their financial support.

“We need to accommodate the thousands coming to Namugongo, provide meals, medical care, and sanitation, and ensure tight security,” said Rt. Rev. Pons Awinjo Ozella of Nebbi Diocese.

“This cannot happen without collective financial support.”

The funds will come primarily from corporate sponsors, individuals, friends, and well-wishers. Already, Vision Group has pledged full support, offering its vast media network to rally contributions from across the country.

“We dominate over half of Uganda’s media audience,” said CEO Don Wanyama, “and we’re using that platform to mobilise every Ugandan—whether you’re in a city or village—to give what you can.”

Wanyama reaffirmed Vision Group’s long-standing relationship with the Church of Uganda, noting last year’s success, where the media house played a lead role in publicity and fundraising.

“We shall be everywhere. We’re not just covering the story—we’re part of the mission,” he said.

From Arua to Nebbi, foot pilgrims have begun organising their journeys. Meals and resting points are planned, but the execution now hinges on financial mobilisation.

In a bid to raise both money and morale, the Martyrs’ Choir Competition has also returned, attracting over 300 choirs nationwide from the first edition.

Each choir contributes sh100,000, and the event is designed to not only honour the martyrs but also add to the fundraising momentum.

As June approaches, organisers are calling on businesses, institutions, and ordinary Ugandans to be part of history.

“Giving to this cause,” said Bishop Loum, “is not just supporting a celebration—it’s investing in unity, faith, and national pride.”
