Five women, including Kampala city deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, have been released on bail, after spending three weeks on remand at Luzira Prison.

Others are Ingrid Turinawe, Faridah Nangozi, Phiona Kabayiza and Shadia Namutebi.

The five individuals are facing charges of being a public nuisance on the road at Arua Park in Kampala. On February 17, 2025, the accused staged a protest, demanding the release of four-time presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye and his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale, who are facing treason charges before Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court.

Buganda Road Court grade one magistrate, Winnie Nankya, on March 10, 2025, granted the accused bail after finding their sureties substantial.

The magistrate released each of the accused on a cash bail of sh500,000 and their sureties were directed to execute a non cash bond of sh1m.

Nankya disregarded state attorney Allan Mucunguzi statements that the sureties are just friends to the accused persons and cannot be considered to stand surety for them.

The accused were remanded by Ronald Samuel Wander, Bayern Turinawe, Ivan Musinguzi and Ronald Mugabi.

The magistrate adjourned the case to April 23, 2025, for hearing.
