Eddie Ssebufu, commonly known as Eddie Mutwe and head of security for National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, has been remanded to Masaka Central Prison on charges of assault and aggravated robbery.

Appearing before the Masaka Chief Magistrates Court on May 5, 2025, Grade One Magistrate Abraham Kaiza ordered Ssebufu to be held on remand until May 25 this year.

Media access to the court was blocked by security, and Ssebufu was brought to court under tight security led by the police, prisons service, and plain-clothed officers at around 2:00pm.

Ssebufu’s lead counsel, Majeran Kazibwe, arrived shortly after the proceedings had commenced. NUP supporters were not permitted to enter the court premises.

Ssebufu now joins his fellow Kyagulanyi security aides—Achilleo Kivumbi, Gaddafi Mugumya, and Grace Wakabi—who had earlier been remanded to Masaka Central Prison on related charges.

The court heard that the prosecution will rely on testimony from two journalists—Margret Kayondo (Simba FM) and Zainab Namusazi (NBS)—as well as John Mukalazi, Fred Lubega, and Haruna Sekitto, who are among the complainants.

They reportedly lost money, mobile phones, and other valuables during a scuffle in Manja Village, Kiwangala sub-county, Lwengo district.

The incident occurred last year during the burial of Pascal Kivumbi, a relative of the late Democratic Party secretary general, Mathias Nsubuga.

Reacting to the developments, Gyaviira Ssebina, a parliamentary contender for Nyendo-Mukungwe Division in Masaka city, welcomed Ssebufu’s court appearance.

"We were worried over the whereabouts of Eddie Mutwe. We are happy that he has been produced before court for justice to prevail. He is now in safe custody," he said.

Ssebufu reportedly went missing on April 27 before the Chief of Defence Forces revealed on Thursday last week that he was in custody.
