_______________

Eritreans living in Uganda are preparing for the 2nd Eritrean Diaspora Investment Conference and Festival.

Scheduled for December 21, 2024, at Palace Play Park in Kampala, the event aims to celebrate the Eritrean community’s contributions to Uganda’s economy while fostering unity and cultural integration.

A path forward

Organised by the Office of the President in partnership with the Eritrean community, the conference seeks to build on the successes of its inaugural edition. Under the theme: Unity Through Diversity, the event reflects Uganda’s inclusive approach to welcoming diverse communities and encouraging investment.

The event is expected to host high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, and Eritrean Ambassador to Uganda, Mohammed Sulieman Ahmed. Senior presidential advisor on diaspora affairs Ambassador Abbey Walusimbi emphasized the significance of the conference during a preparatory meeting with Eritrean entrepreneurs.

Walusimbi said: “This platform highlights the business achievements of the Eritrean community and strengthens their ties with Uganda. It also reaffirms President Museveni’s Pan-African vision, which celebrates unity among Africans”.

Contributions to Uganda’s economy

The Eritrean community has over time reportedly contributed over $3b (about sh11 trillion) in investments across various industries.

With a population exceeding 240,000 in Uganda, 25% of whom are business entrepreneurs, Eritrean nationals have become integral to the country’s economic growth.

“Eritrean entrepreneurs have displayed exceptional business acumen, and their investments are a testament to Uganda’s investor-friendly policies,” Walusimbi added. This community’s contributions highlight the positive outcomes of cultural integration and economic collaboration.

A celebration of culture and unity

In tandem with the conference, the Beles Bubu Family Fusion Festival will serve as a cultural showcase. Spearheaded by Kisanet Tedros, CEO of Beles Bubu, this festival aims to unite families, empower women and celebrate African heritage.

“This festival will tell inspiring stories of women entrepreneurs from eight African nations, illustrating how women uplift society,” Kisanet shared. The event will include panel discussions, cultural dances, storytelling, diverse cuisines, and interactive activities for children.

Kisanet expressed gratitude to Uganda for its open-door policy and peaceful environment.

“Uganda has become our second home. I appreciate President Museveni’s support in creating a space where Eritrean families and businesses can thrive,” she said.

Investment and dialogue

Eritrean investor, Kidane Ghebrehawariat Habteselassie, underscored the importance of the conference in fostering better communication between Eritrean nationals and the Ugandan government.

“This event bridges the gap between policymakers and the Eritrean community, encouraging collaboration that benefits both sides,” he said.

Habteselassie also highlighted the broader benefits of Eritrean investments, including increased tourism and foreign direct remittances, which strengthen Uganda’s economy.

The event's venue general manager Sandeep Bugatha expressed enthusiasm about hosting the Eritreans.

“This is a great opportunity for both the Eritrean community and the public. We’re thrilled to provide a platform for meaningful discussions and cultural celebrations,” Bugatha said. He invited all stakeholders, potential investors, and families to participate in this historic event.
