Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Julius Ahimbisibwe, the former Jinja Road Police Station commander who was last year charged with shooting the mother of his children, was on Easter Monday found dead in a septic tank at his home in Nakitokolo, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso district.
The case has been registered under reference number Nsangi CRB 300/2025, as investigations commence into what police are describing as a “suspicious death.”
The discovery was made at around 2:00am and reported to Nsangi Police Division by one Abdul Ziwa, who was reportedly in the company of the deceased’s wife at the time.
Kampala Metropolitan South acting regional criminal investigations officer, D/SP Innocent Dusabe, confirmed that a team led by Nsangi Division Police Commander SP Rogers Chebene, Acting OC CID D/AIP Grace Auma, and the divisional Scenes of Crime Officer visited the scene.
“The body was recovered and conveyed for postmortem. Inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding his death,” Dusabe said.
Although police have not ruled out any possibilities, early indications suggest the death could be a case of suicide. However, detectives insist no conclusions will be drawn until forensic findings and the postmortem report are complete.
Ahimbisibwe had been under criminal investigation since March last year when he reportedly stormed his estranged wife’s home in the early hours, shot her in the shoulder, and later allegedly raped her.
According to police reports, he falsely presented her to medics at Mulago Hospital as his sister who had been attacked by thugs.
After the incident, the victim managed to escape and later reported the matter to authorities.
Investigators retrieved DNA samples from both the scene and the victim, which were submitted to the Government Analytical Laboratory in Wandegeya for comparison.
Ahimbisibwe was subsequently arrested and charged in court with attempted murder and rape.
He was remanded but later released on bail pending trial.
His death on Easter Monday has added a tragic and dramatic turn to an already disturbing case involving violence, abuse of authority, and systemic failure to ensure accountability within police ranks.
A senior police officer who spoke to New Vision on condition of anonymity stressed that investigations will explore all possible motives and scenarios, including whether Ahimbisibwe may have been under psychological distress due to the ongoing criminal case and the accompanying social stigma.
“We’re treating this matter with the seriousness it deserves. The technical team is analysing the scene and awaiting pathology findings. We urge the public to avoid speculation,” he said.
More details will be provided as police piece together what led to the former senior officer’s mysterious death.
