Former students of Gayaza High School from the class of 1974 are preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary this year. The old girls have started to prepare for the anticipated colourful day.

On Friday last week, the former students held golden jubilee celebration prayers before they swarmed the Sheraton Kampala Hotel for a corporate dinner.

Earlier on the same day, All Saints Church Nakasero in Kampala was filled with former students from the class of 1974, teaming up together for a reunion in school uniforms with a handful dressed in gomesis.

Led by Bulambuli District Woman MP and former energy minister Eng. Irene Muloni, a group of students from Gayaza High School gathered at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel to plan their upcoming golden jubilee celebration.

“The students were determined to make the occasion a memorable one by gathering in a fundraising dinner to hit the ground running,” Muloni said.

By God’s grace, a girl child has made it to the top in Uganda and we prayed for it today at the church and we are fund-raising to kick-start the mega-celebrations for this year, she said.

Former finance minister Maria Kiwanuka, speaking as the chief guest, urged the girl child to focus on education and discipline in life.

“I want girls to be filled with hope, knowing that with education, one can achieve anything she sets her mind to,” she said.

“We want the girl child to embrace the role of education in life and we have gathered here to celebrate the excellence of our hard work as compared to a boy child whom the African setting has viewed as the most important and superior over humanity,” she said.

"Gayaza High School is one of the oldest girls’ secondary schools and we turned up dressed in our uniforms to show solidarity, respect, accountability and discipline that we exhibited during our days," Muloni added.

Gayaza is Church-founded and government-aided with its motto: Never Give Up, has nurtured exceptional ladies in the country to achieve remarkable success globally.

Among those present were former agriculture minister Victoria Ssekitoleko, former First Lady Miria Kalule Obote and Supreme court judge justice Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza.

Muloni appealed to the Girl child to always be mindful about their future and consider education as a very important aspect adding that discipline is pivotal in every person’s career.

At the fundraising, the portrait of the class of 1974 with their school mistress Miss Worren Sheillah, who led the school from 1972 to 1999, mobilised shillings 2.37 million as part of the contribution for class' golden jubilee celebrations this year.
