Govt dispatches more iron sheets to Karamoja

Another group of former cattle raiders in the Karamoja subregion are to receive iron sheets as part of their resettlement package.

On Tuesday (March 11), the Government through the Office of the Prime Minister dispatched over 10, 000 pieces of iron sheets to the subregion.

During the flagging off event at OPM stores in Namanve, Dr Peter Lokeris, the minister for Karamoja said that the over 11, 168 pieces of iron sheets were a package from President Yoweri Museveni to the reformed Karamojong cattle rustlers locally referred to as Karacunas. 

The group, he added voluntarily handed over guns to the Government,  embraced peace and abandoned cattle rustling.

Beneficiaries, he added are reformed Karacunas who missed out on the previous Government resettlement packages.

Receipts he said will be able to build more "permanent houses".

Flanked by state minister Florence Nambozo, he said that leadership in different districts will distribute the iron sheets.

According to Lokeris, each of the beneficiaries will receive 26 iron sheets.

The OPM team states that 108, 720 iron sheets had by Tuesday, March 11 been released to the Karacunas and the vulnerable people in Karamoja.

A release from the OPM's office states that the ministers appealed to the Karamojong to prioritize peace if they were to develop the area which has the potential to feed the country.
