MASINDI - Police in Masindi district have arrested Ajelinda Ongera, 62, for severely torturing a four-year-old child in Chinguyomu village, Pakanyi sub-county.

According to Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, the incident of child torture was reported at Masindi Central Police Station on March 31, 2025.

Hakiza stated that the four-year-old boy sustained severe burns on both hands, allegedly inflicted by his grandmother, Ajelinda.

The grandmother reportedly accused the child of eating food meant for supper and beat him severely.

"The following morning, she allegedly forced his hands into a fire, causing serious burns. The child was rescued by the suspect’s daughter-in-law, Nyirach Maureen, who took him to the women’s councillor of Chongoyoma village. The matter was then reported to Masindi Police Station," said Hakiza.

He added that investigations are ongoing, with the suspect arrested and detained at Masindi Police Station. The victim was examined, and statements have been recorded from relevant witnesses.

"We urge everyone to provide loving care and protection to children. Remember, torture is a serious crime punishable under Ugandan law. Let’s work together to prevent such incidents and ensure justice is served," he said.
