HOIMA - Three people have died on spot in a motor vehicle crash involving a Fuso lorry and a tricycle along Hoima-Kyenjojo Road in Hoima City.

Eyewitnesses report that the lorry Reg. No. UBN 463R lost control, rammed into a moving tricycle and rolled several times, killing three people on spot.

The accident occurred on Thursday morning in Kiryatete along the Hoima-Kyenjojo highway. Some of the survivors were rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital and other clinics around the town in critical condition.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine regional police spokesperson, said that they are investigating a fatal crash.

"It's alleged that the driver of UBN 563R allegedly lost control and rammed into the motorcycles, resulting in fatalities and injuries of one Irumba rider, Julius Tibenda, and Ethan Darius Baguma (a 3.5-year-old male juvenile, passenger)," Hakiza said.

He identified the injured as Fiona Kasemire (30-year-old female, passenger on motorcycle), receiving treatment at EDPA.

He said that the driver is still at large and that inquiries are currently underway to determine the cause of the accident and bring the perpetrator to justice.

“The driver of the Fuso lorry was trying to dodge a trailer which was being loaded by the roadside, and he ended up ramming into a tricycle, killing the rider and two other people on the spot,”  Bryan Aliguma, who witnessed the incident, reported.

Muhereza Tumusiime, another witness, said, "The child was moving with the mother and all of a sudden he was hit by the speeding lorry and smashed him beyond recognition.” Tumusiime said.

Justine Mbabazi, another resident of Kiryatete, appealed to the city authorities and traffic police to intervene because many drivers overspeed in the city.
