Three senior officials from Iganga General Hospital have been arrested on charges of forgery, falsifying documents, and causing a financial loss of over shillings 150 million to the government.
The individuals under investigation include Dr Dauda Mugoya, the hospital's medical superintendent, Ramathan Mugolofa, the hospital administrator, and Micheal Isabirye, the hospital accountant. Additional arrests have also been made in connection with the case.
The suspects were detained at Iganga Hospital and subsequently transferred to Jinja City Police Station for further investigation.
The State House Health Monitoring Unit, in collaboration with Uganda Police, conducted the operation in the Iganga district.
According to an official from the Unit, who preferred anonymity, the unit was exercising its mandate in the Busoga sub-region.
The official added that, in the Iganga district specifically, the Unit has been assessing and evaluating the utilisation of human resources, finances, infrastructure and equipment, essential medicines, and medical services of all health units in the district.
“At Iganga Hospital, the Unit, working with Uganda Police, intervened against the medical superintendent, hospital administrator, and hospital accountant. They were detained at Jinja under GEF114/2024 for forgery, uttering false documents, and causing financial loss to the government totalling over shillings 150 million,” the official said.
He added that the three suspects were involved in forging the signatures of other government officials and causing financial loss to the central government. Investigations are ongoing, and once completed, they will be arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court.
The Unit is also investigating the establishment of illegal private rooms at the hospital, irregularities in the deployment of nursing students, lack of medicine accountability in various wards, forgeries in fuel usage and management, and issuing 10-year contracts to cleaners, despite the hospital reportedly being the dirtiest in the region.
Recently, during the State of the Nation Address, President Yoweri Museveni said he would intensify the fight against corruption in the country. The Unit in Busoga is being led by Dr Julian Nabatanzi and assisted by Dr Brian Arinaitwe.
The Unit was established by President Yoweri Museveni to independently monitor and assess the delivery of health services in the country and report directly to him.
