Kalangala storm: Uganda Police Force counting losses

Uganda Police Force has shared details of the havoc wrecked by a devastating storm on Bugala island that ravaged Kalangala District Police.
A devastating storm hit Bugala Island today, March 15, 2025, at around 7:21am.
Kalangala District encompasses an archipelago of 84 islands in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria, with 43 of them being inhabited.
The storm, on Lake Victoria, "originated from the eastern side of Kalangala, caused significant damage to the police barracks, leaving almost all officers' accommodations destroyed and part of the station's administration roof torn off," reads a statement from Police.
SP Twaha Kasirye, the Public Relations Officer for Greater Masaka, revealed that the three fatalities in the Saturday morning incident include: D/Sgt Mujasi Micheal, plus Hassan Waswa a barber and Geoffrey Sekiwere.

First responders from Uganda Red Cross Society revealed that a severe thunderstorm characterized by heavy rain, and strong winds (gusty), ravaged the island in the wee hours of Saturday, March 15.
"Our team is already on ground conducting assessment. They are now in Kifuufu, headed to Kanyogoga, Bugala, Mweena, and then round up the assessment" said Irene Nakasitta the URCS spokesperson.
At the time of filing this report (Saturday afternoon) rescue efforts were still underway.
