The police in Rwenzori East have begun investigating a shocking case in Kasese district, where a man severed his wife's arms after a violent domestic altercation.

This was revealed on Monday, March 24, 2025, by SP Nelson Tumushiime, the Rwenzori East regional police spokesperson, at their headquarters in the Central Division of Kasese Municipality.

SP Tumushiime identified the suspect as Hassan Ngombi Kadogo, a bodaboda rider, and the victim as Esther Mbambu, a businesswoman. Both are residents of Road Barrier cell in Bulembia Division, Kasese Municipality.

"The horrific incident happened on the morning of Saturday, March 22, 2025. We responded to the scene, arrested the suspect, and rushed the victim to the hospital for treatment," Tumushiime said.

He attributed the gruesome act to domestic violence, noting that the vice is on the rise. He revealed that police register over 40 domestic violence cases in the district every month, with women and children being the most affected.

"You realise that these incidents are repeatedly happening here in Kasese. Just two weeks ago, a man stabbed his wife to death. We shall conduct thorough investigations into these cases," Tumushiime said.

He added that police would intensify community sensitisation efforts, with a strong focus on addressing domestic violence, which is becoming widespread across the district.

"We urge religious, cultural, and local leaders to speak out on the overwhelming cases of domestic violence," he said.

Currently, Esther Mbambu is recovering at Mount St Mary's Hospital in Kasese Municipality after undergoing a successful operation.

Neighbour speaks out

A neighbour to the couple, who requested anonymity, revealed that the suspect, Hassan, had asked his wife to buy him a personal motorcycle with the money she had saved in a local savings group.

However, Esther decided to use the money to buy land for the family instead, a decision that infuriated Hassan, leading him to cut off her arms in anger.

While delivering his sermon on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at St Stephen Kihyo Church of Uganda in Bwera Archdeaconry, Rt. Rev. Nason Baluku, the Bishop of South Rwenzori Diocese, urged the people of Kasese and the nation to embrace reconciliation, forgiveness, and repentance to resolve conflicts, especially among married couples.

"Let this Lenten season be a turning point," Bishop Nason said.
