Church of Uganda Archbishop Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu has condemned the recent acts of violence by security officers in the Kawempe North by-election campaigns.

The prelate's call follows violence playing out in Kawempe between the National Unity Platform (NUP) and security after party flag-bearer counsel Nalukoola was nominated.

While leading the Ash Wednesday service on March 5, 2025, at Parliament, Kaziimba emphasized that the Lent season is a time for restoration and returning to God.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent season in Christian faith. Lent is a 40-day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that ends at sundown on Holy Thursday.

Kaziimba urged security officers to exercise restraint even when provoked, stressing that all individuals deserve humane treatment, noting that even animals are no longer subjected to such cruelty.

The condemnation follows closely after a meeting held by the Electoral Commission (EC), headed by Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi. This meeting included senior police leadership, led by Director of Operations AIGP Frank Mwesigwa, to discuss security concerns and conduct during the ongoing campaigns for Member of Parliament and Councillor in Kazo-Angola.

The meeting at the EC headquarters on 7th Street Industrial Area, focused on ensuring that all actors follow the law and guidelines issued by EC, avoid acts of violent confrontations and exercise of maximum restraint, to ensure that the people of Kawempe chose their representatives in peace and security.

During the Ash Wednesday service, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa thanked the Archbishop for leading the service and encouraged fellow MPs to remain consistent in prayer.
