In a bid to ensure sustainable distribution of water in Lyantonde district, National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NW&SC) has injected about sh15.7m to start construction of the project.

The project which is in response to the presidential directive to national water to ensure continued supply of water in Lyantonde following the launch of the Nshaara Industrial Park, is aimed at benefiting the communities around Rushere, Kiruhura, Akageeti and Lyantonde in general.

The president recently sanctioned the creation of the Nshaara Industrial Park in Lyantonde and directed National water to ensure provision of a safe and reliable water supply to aid the establishment of the pack.

According to Silver Mugisha the executive Director National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NW&SC), the project is in line with the government of Uganda’s drive for industrialisation as a way to grow the economy and create jobs.

It will entail the construction of a new intake and new 5,000cubic litre per day water treatment plant at Lake Kacyera, where the water shall be pumped from the nearest reservoir in Nshaara Ranch for distribution to the industrial park and the surrounding Lyantonde water supply area.

Speaking during the signing of the contract between National Water and the contractors from Plumb Base Uganda ltd who are in a joint venture with Anhui Sijian Holding group company ltd, Mugisha warned the contractors against importing raw materials from outside Uganda.

“What prompted this project is because the water available in Lyantonde is not enough, that is why the milk factory at Akageeti is not getting sufficient water, we have to cut off water getting to Rushere in order to be able to supply akageeti,” he said.

The situation according to Mugisha has been worsened by introducing an industrial park at Nshaara which has increased pressure on the available water sources in Lyantonde.

He explained that this project is coming to solve the problem of increased pressure for water supply within the district saying the current water system at Kacyera is in allocation which is affected by hard raw water.

“Where we are proposing to put this one, we hope we are going to overcome the issue of hard water and be able to blend with the existing water so that we can reduce the effect of hardness. By installing the 5million litre per day treatment plant, we shall be able to alleviate this issue, “he said.

The corporation he said was in final negotiations with some landowners saying some stakeholders wanted to take advantage of the project.

“There might be issues where people need compensation but we are telling them that this project is coming to help them and we have no money for compensation. Just like in other areas where people have cooperated with us, we also call upon them to corporate, “he said

Mugisha warned the contractors against failing to deliver according to the project design.

“You must deliver the project in time, within cost and of the quality we tendered out, we don’t know you very well, you are new to us and we don’t know where you are coming from. If you are used to doing things differently, for us we want you to deliver according to the design.
