Dramatic scenes unfolded in court when Benson Muhirwe cried, begging for forgiveness for his wife, Carolyn Tumwesige, 27, who allegedly attempted to kill him.
Muhirwe’s reason for seeking forgiveness was poignant—he claimed there would be no one to cook for him if Tumwesige was imprisoned.
On March 7, 2025, Muhirwe forgave his wife in Buganda Road Court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi.
The incident that led to the court case occurred on January 24, 2025, when a quarrel between the couple escalated, resulting in Tumwesige attempting to cut off her husband’s hand with a panga.
This act, according to the prosecution, constitutes attempted murder, contrary to Section 187(a) of the Penal Code Act. Tumwesige had also been accused of stealing 7 million shillings meant for her husband.
Prosecutor Ivan Kyazze presented multiple cases, but Benson forgave his wife, as stated in his Police statement. Muhirwe requested the court to forgive his wife, citing her newfound stability and the lessons she had learned.
Defence lawyer Chris Ocom sought a minimum punishment, given it was Tumwesige’s first offence.
Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi released Tumwesige without compensation, as Muhirwe expressed his willingness to reunite with his wife and pay any fine.
Muhirwe was subsequently ordered not to return to court in case anything happened to him.
