HOIMA - A 22-year-old man has died on spot after the dome of the mosque commonly known as (qubba) that has been under construction collapsed on him in Mparo North cell, Hoima City.
The deceased has been identified as Robert Muhumuza, a resident of Kimanya cell, Mabaale town council, in Kagadi district.
He was one of the workmen at Mparo Mosque being built by the family of Sheikh Ibrahim Bitamazire.
According to Eid Magezi, the city councillor for Hoima East division, the incident happened at around 4:00pm on Monday (April 21) but the body was trapped inside until 8:00pm when it was retrieved by police together with residents.
Magezi has blamed the contractor for using poor building materials that do not meet the standards," when you look at the cement ratio, the iron bars that were used are for 10' which are not recommended for such things, Secondly it has been too heavy for the ceiling which has led to its collapse," says Magezi.
Jackson Arinaitwe, the brother of the deceased, has appealed to the government and well-wishers to come in and help the family because the deceased has left two children, including one with a two-week-old child.
Julius Hakiza Allan, the Albertine regional police publicity officer has said that the body was retrieved and taken to the city mortuary.
