The Minister of the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, has called for patriotism training to be intensified in Uganda for national development.
She described such training as a strong pillar of development, "which is a basis of strong homes, admirable communities, and respectable nations".
If more patriotism values were promoted and inculcated in the population, the levels of corruption would dramatically drop, leading to more prosperity for Uganda, said Babalanda.
She was speaking during the pass-out of patriotism corps from various schools at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala on Thursday.
The event was organized under the theme: 'Patriotism for socio-economic transformation.'
President Yoweri Museveni, in the company of First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni, presided over the event attended by over 40,000 young people drawn from schools in the five divisions of Kampala.
“Without a patriotic population, you would waste your time putting up many beautiful infrastructures, great health centres, and schools," said Babalanda.
“You would waste time putting up farms and demonstration centres. Why? It is because all of them would be vandalized or be built with half the required materials and would collapse in a short time. The situation would revert to zero all the time."
The minister thanked the Patriotism Secretariat under the Office of the President for passing out the trainees.
She said the training is the medicine, especially, for Kampala, “where people are being misled into illegal activities that have the potential to not only affect their lives but cripple development and promote hatred of government".
Babalanda is hopeful that the youth passed out at Kololo will promote patriotism in their families and communities to create a multiplier effect on mindset change.
