President Yoweri Museveni is scheduled to commission the Judiciary's multibillion Supreme Court and Court of Appeal twin towers buildings based at the Square in Kampala city tomorrow (April 18, 2024).
According to the Judiciary's permanent secretary Pius Bigirimana, the commissioning of the Twin Towers buildings will save the Judiciary about sh6b which it annually pays in rent for the appellate courts.
The construction of the appellate courts’ buildings commenced in 2019. Billed at sh63.9b, the Twin Towers have a basement parking that accommodates 226 vehicles, modern courtrooms, chambers for the justices of the courts, a restaurant, gym, child care centers, conference halls among other amenities. The construction of the buildings has been fully funded by the Government.
While presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony on December 5, 2019, ex-Chief Justice Bart Katureebe said the project of building the appellate courts started in 1999 moving through many stages including the use of public-private partnerships.
“I am therefore glad to inform you that the activities that we have witnessed today constitute part of the measures that the Judiciary is undertaking to meet the service level expectations from our customers by providing physical access to justice,” Katureebe said.
