President Yoweri Museveni has condoled with Kasese district families that lost their loved ones to mudslides in May.
The families received the money during a meeting with gender minister Peace Mutuuzo on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Kyarumba sub-county headquarters in Kasese district.
Heavy rains triggered mudslides in the mountainous area of the district, especially in Bukonzo East and Busongora North constituencies, causing the death of 13 people and displacement of over 5,000 people who were forced into temporary camps.
The President, who was represented by Mutuuzo, advised the residents in red zones (areas prone to mudslides) to initially relocate to safer places.
"Leave those risky area as we plan how to permanently relocate you," Museveni said.
"You can even use part of this money to buy land in safer places rather than wasting it," he added.
Mutuuzo also advised Ugandans to embrace the system of migrating to safer districts that have enough land for the safety of their lives and properties but also attain safe and sustainable developments.
"Personally I am a Mukiga but our family and many others shifted from Kisoro were our lives were at stake because of mudslides and are now happily living in Bunyangabu district," Mutuuzo said.
"Because of a harmonious living I was even elected their Woman Member of Parliament," she added.
Government commended
Kasese LC5 chairperson Eliphazi Muhindi commended the Government for the continued support to the people, especially in times of disaster including relief items and now the shillings five million condolence given to each of the families that lost their dear ones.
He, however, advised people in the risky areas to only use their lands for planting food crops and later in the evening vacate and sleep in safer places.
However, Kyarumba LC3 chairperson Ivan Bwambale called upon the Government to repair the community bridges that were washed away by the mudslides.
He added that of late, they find it hard to transport agricultural produce to the market.
"Equally people don't easily access other services," he said.
Shillings 50 million was given out to 10 affected people including eight from Kyarumba and Kyondo sub-counties and two from Kasese Municipality.
