President Yoweri Museveni met and held discussions with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Monday regarding the status of the DR Congo peace process.

The meeting was held at State House Entebbe and was also attended by the peace process secretariat.

Together, Museveni and Kenyatta co-chaired the meeting, where they received reports from the stakeholders.

The peace process is focusing on the restoration of peace and security in eastern DR Congo.

"I thank him and his secretariat for continuing to facilitate this EAC-led Nairobi peace process," tweeted Museveni of Kenyatta, who arrived in Uganda last Saturday.

He served as Kenya's fourth president from 2013 until 2022, when he was succeeded by his deputy of ten years, William Ruto.

DR Congo was on the agenda at the 21st Extra-Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State held on May 31 this year in Burundi's capital, Bujumbura.

At the summit, the regional leaders received and adopted the reports on the peace and security situation in eastern DR Congo submitted by the facilitator and the chairperson of the EAC chiefs of defence forces.

According to a communiqué at the summit, the heads of state took note of the progress made by the facilitator and the EAC regional force in the implementation of the EAC-led Nairobi process.

They condemned in the strongest terms the ceasefire violations in eastern DR Congo and directed the EAC regional force to take measures to stop their recurrence.

The meeting directed the EAC regional force to, among other things, safeguard and maintain the areas vacated by M23 and other armed groups, as well as sustain the orderly withdrawal of these armed groups from the remaining occupied areas.
