Muslim community cautioned against march to Parliament

According to the old constitution of UMSC, Mubaje and Waiswa were meant to step down after clocking 70 years.

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has cautioned the Muslim community against participating in the march to Parliament.

The march slated for today, March 18, 2025, is to oppose the re-election of Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Mubajje.

Mubaje was last week sworn in for another term of five years as Mufti in Uganda. He started his new term on March 13, 2025, at UMSC headquarters in Kampala after taking an oath administered by Sheikh Zayid Swaleh Lubanga the director of sharia.

Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the first deputy mufti of Uganda who recently celebrated his 70th birthday was also sworn in for another term of five years!

The two were sworn in after the college of eminent sheikhs (Majilis al Ulama) endorsed them for another term of five years in office.

According to the old constitution of UMSC, Mubaje and Waiswa were meant to step down after clocking 70 years, but on July 13, 2022, the general assembly amended it to allow the mufti serve up to 75 years of age.

Supreme Council spokesperson Ashraf Zziwa Muvawala said on March 17 that the Mufti was rightfully re-elected by the mandated organ, as reflected in the UMSC constitution.

It should be recalled that a section of Muslims ran to court last week to oppose the re-election of mufti Mubajje after he clocked 70 years old on Wednesday last week and are said to be the same people behind the said march to parliament.
