NDC-U, Russian university discuss joint initiative

Uganda and Russia have continued to maintain strong ties since the East African country gained independence in 1962.

MOSCOW - The National Defence College – Uganda (NDC-U) and Russia's MGIMO University (Moscow State Institute of International Relations) are discussing initiatives to have collaborative efforts in international relations and defence diplomacy, among others.

The visiting defence college delegation, which included staff, students and Uganda's Embassy in Moscow held a meeting with the Russian institution on April 19.

"The main focus was on the development of joint educational initiatives in the field of international relations and defence diplomacy, prospects for academic exchanges for students and teachers. The parties also declared their intention to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding, which will consolidate the partnership between the universities," a statement issued said.

Brigadier David Humble Tweheyo led a delegation of 11 students and 7 staff from the defence college; Brigadier Charity Bainababo (formerly the Commander of the Presidential Guard) delivered a speech of thanks on behalf of the students of the college.
Brigadier Tweheyo called for the strengthening of relations between Uganda and Russia through educational initiatives and exchange of experience in the field of international relations analytics.

The event was attended by Uganda's Ambassador to Russia Moses Kizige; Deputy Chief of Mission Mwebaze Gideon Rutazindwa; and Military Attaché, Brigadier Patrick Black Mwesigye.

On behalf of MGIMO University, the guests were greeted by the Director of the Institute of International Studies, Suchkov Maxim Alexandrovich. Suchkov discussed the main areas of development of academic and applied research at the institution.

MGIMO continues to expand cooperation with African countries in efforts to make the institution a leading center for international education and dialogue.

Uganda and Russia have continued to maintain strong ties since the East African country gained independence in 1962.

The Uganda-Russia cooperation extends to fields such as academia, scientific research, and military training, among others.
