Police at Kira Road have arrested a suspected habitual criminal believed to be behind a series of violent robberies along the Northern Bypass and surrounding areas, bringing relief to residents who had been living in fear.

The suspect, identified as Gideon Matwa, a 35-year-old resident of Kazinga zone in Kiwatule parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala, was apprehended following a tip-off from a recent victim.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, Matwa allegedly ambushed and robbed a businessman near the fish ponds in Kazinga zone.

Eyewitnesses said the suspect snatched phones from the victim before attempting to flee by diving into a nearby stream.

“The victim gave chase and alerted the police, who swiftly responded with support from UPDF personnel. The suspect was apprehended shortly after,” Onyango confirmed.

Two smartphones valued at sh1.5 million were recovered from Matwa at the time of his arrest.

He has since confessed to carrying out multiple robberies in the areas of the Northern Bypass, Lower Kazinga, and Metroplex Mall in Naalya, according to Onyango.

Police records further indicate that Matwa has a criminal history, including prior charges of burglary and theft in Lower Kazinga.

He is currently being held at Kiwatule Police Station and will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

Onyango urged residents to remain vigilant and continue working with security agencies to rid their communities of criminals.
