Police halt child marriage in Busia

According to police reports, on February 22, 2025, the family of Mohammed Hussein arranged a marriage for his 17-year-old daughter,(names withheld). 

A traditional Muslim wedding (Nikah) was initially set at Majanji Road Mosque but was abandoned when police were alerted.

BUSIA - Police in Busia have arrested several people, including a bridegroom and the parents of a minor, for attempting to conduct a child marriage in Sofia Village, Busia district.

According to police reports, on February 22, 2025, the family of Mohammed Hussein arranged a marriage for his 17-year-old daughter,(names withheld). 

A traditional Muslim wedding (Nikah) was initially set at Majanji Road Mosque but was abandoned when police were alerted.

Later that evening, the ceremony was resumed at the bride’s father’s home, prompting police intervention.

“We arrested the groom, Hussein Issa, 21, and the victim’s parents, who had consented to the marriage. A medical examination confirmed the victim is 17 years old. Investigations are ongoing,” said Moses  Mugwe, police publicist for Bukedi South Region.
