KANUNGU - He was the only son of 75-year-old Nyansio Bagambana, a resident of Kanjara cell in Southern ward, Kanungu town council in western Uganda.
However, when Bagambana fell ill, the son was unable to foot the medical bills, which caused him to ask for the return his land documents to sell off a section to raise the funds needed for treatment. However, the plan caused a rift with his son.
On February 04, 2025, Bagambana’s wife, unbothered about the rift, according to Kigezi Police region spokesperson Elly Maate, left home and went to a nearby bar for an outing with villagemates.
However, on her return home at around 9:00pm, she was shocked to find the body of her husband lying on his bed, with the head chopped off. Beside the bed, she came across a blood-stained matchet, suspected to have been used in ending Bagambana’s life.
Maate explained that the wife, in panic, notified area LC1 chairperson Koronerio Twesigye, who in turn notified the Police who came with a canine unit, with the hope of tracking the killers.
According to Maate, to the shock of the village residents, the dog led the detectives to the deceased’s son, Erias Nahabwe's home. For fear, he explained, the son, now the prime suspect, fled his home and efforts were still ongoing to hunt and arrest him over the murder.
The investigators are also hunting the deceased’s herdsman, who also disappeared from home for yet unknown reasons and is suspected to have participated in the act of murder.
The Police took Bagambana’s body to Katate Health Center IV for a postmortem as inquiries into this matter continued.
“This is an unfortunate incident because the prime suspect was the only son to Bagambana and out of trust he had surrendered his land documents to him. But when he requested his son money for treatment when he fell sick, the young man could not do anything and out of frustration, the Mzeei demanded documents to sell part of his land, which caused the misunderstanding,” Maate said.
He appealed to whoever has information that can lead to his arrest to notify the Police.
He vowed that the Police would use all means to ensure the suspects are arrested and taken to courts of law.
