President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to grace this year’s Martyrs Day celebrations at the Anglican Shrine, according to the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu.
He made the announcement on Sunday while addressing the press at the Anglican shrine in Namugongo, shortly after touring the site to assess its readiness for the celebrations scheduled for 3rd June.
Held under the theme ‘Imitating God’s goodness, by doing well’ drawn from Galatians 6:9, this year’s celebrations are being led by the Northern Uganda Cluster. They will also feature Archbishop Emeritus Henry Luke Orombi as the main celebrant.
While addressing the media, Archbishop Kaziimba made an appeal for peace ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“My message to all Ugandans: let us respect one another and exercise humanity. To politicians, respect each other and when given a chance to lead, do so with integrity and respect for one another,” Kaziimba said.
Preparations in high gear
As part of the preparations, the chairperson of the organising committee, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, said medical services have been stationed at both shrines to treat pilgrims presenting with various ailments.
She added that cesspool emptiers have been deployed to service toilets in real time, and that epidemiologists are on the ground conducting disease surveillance to prevent potential outbreaks such as monkeypox and cholera.
