The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda, meeting at Zebra Hotel in Masaka city on Sunday, March 30, 2025, elected Rev. Canon Joshua Kugonza as the third Bishop of Masindi-Kitara Diocese.
A statement released by Rev. Canon William Ongeng, the provincial secretary, on Sunday announced that the bishop-elect will be consecrated and enthroned as the third bishop of the diocese on August 3, 2025, at St Matthew's Cathedral, Masindi.
Bishop-elect Kugonza will succeed Bishop George William Kasangaki, who will be retiring in August this year.
Who is Rev. Canon Kugonza?
Rev. Canon Kugonza was born on October 7, 1976, in Kiryandongo district.
He was born again on September 13, 1989, at Alwala Church of Uganda in Apac district, West Lango Diocese.
He was ordained as a deacon on January 3, 2010, and priested on December 14, 2010, at St Matthew's Cathedral, Masindi.
He is a Canon of St Matthew's Cathedral, Masindi.
He is married to Proscovia Allen Kugonza, and they have been blessed with four children.
Rev. Canon Kugonza is currently the diocesan secretary of Masindi-Kitara Diocese, a position he has held since 2021.
He previously served as a parish priest, project officer with Samaritan's Purse, headteacher, and a teacher at Kigumba Intensive Primary School.
He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Divinity from Uganda Christian University, a Diploma in Education from National Teachers College Ngetta in Lira district, and several other professional qualifications.
