Security ramped up at Namugongo sites

Once again, local and global attention is turning to Namugongo, as pilgrims from within the country and beyond make their way to the famed sites honouring the Uganda Martyrs.

While some pilgrims have already set foot at the Catholic and Anglican sites in Uganda's central township, others are on their way there — in large groups.

They have planned their respective journeys to arrive at Namugongo just in time for the June 3 annual commemoration of the martyrs.

For now, as finishing touches are being applied at the locations, there is a heavy security presence — both uniformed and in plain clothes — already at the two sites to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.

Patrols are ubiquitous as the security personnel move around their designated jurisdictions, some in pairs, to check that all is well.

At an earlier security preparatory meeting, pilgrims were advised to avoid carrying large bags and luggage to Namugongo and instead limit themselves to light, basic essentials such as warm clothing, IDs, mobile phone as well as arranged return transport.

In previous years, some pilgrims have remained stranded at Namugongo with no planned means to return home.

For a gathering so big, health teams will also be at the sites to handle emergencies.

This year, Lugazi Diocese is hosting the Catholic celebrations at Namugongo.

The theme for the 2025 celebration is drawn from the diocesan vision: “Oh Lord, Let Me See Again” (Mark 10:51).

The foot pilgrims from Lugazi diocese will start their journey on June 1 and arrive at Namugongo the same day.

They will move in three groups from Nkokonjeru vicariate, Naggalama and Lugazi.

According to Fr Vincent Lubega, the Shrine Rector of Namugongo, the Martyrs Day programmes started on May 25 with General Novena reciting, which will go on until June 2.

The Uganda Martyrs Day is held annually to honour the 45 Catholic and Anglican martyrs killed — because of their faith — on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda between 1885 and 1887.
