KAMPALA - Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has told Kampala City road contractors to “stop being jokers” and speed up ongoing works.
She made the call on Tuesday (April 1) while meeting representatives of the contractors shortly after visiting Ssentema Lugala, Sir Apollo Kaggwa, Kulekana Salaama, Kinawataka and Kyebando Ring roads that are under construction.

“I saw some boys struggling to put stones in the gabion because they heard the Prime Minister was coming here. Stop being jokers. We are not here to joke around. We are a government, and if you are not careful enough, we shall cancel those contracts,” Nabbanja told the contractors.
In February this year, Kampala Capital City Authority awarded contracts worth sh176.5 billion to four companies for the construction of 14 roads totaling 19.85 kilometres.
The Prime Minister and the works state minister, Musa Ecweru, decried the slow pace of construction works and wondered why the contractors don’t also work at night to avoid disrupting daytime traffic.

“Can’t you buy the lights and work at night?” she asked the contractors, who insisted, “We work at night.”
However, the visibly angry Nabbanja was not satisfied that the contractors were telling the truth.
“Where [do you work at night]? Okay, I will supervise at night,” she promised.
At this point, Echweru chipped in and reported how the grader in one of the places almost knocked his car as the driver fidgeted to complete some work.

There is a place where the grader was almost knocking me. I think they heard the Prime Minister was coming and so the grader was trying to….” the minister told the meeting that was chaired by Nabbanja.
