NAKASONGOLA - Police have commenced investigations into what caused the multiple-car collision on the Kampala-Gulu highway resulting in the death of two people and injuries to 12 others on January 21, 2025, evening in Nakasongola district.

The crash at Bujaabe village Nakitoma sub-county happened at about 6:08pm and involved a truck registration number UBP 557B (Isuzu Elf), an Isuzu Bus registration number UBD 215R belonging to Nile Star Company and a Toyota Hiace van registration number UBR783N.

Police said in a statement on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, that preliminary investigations point to the cause of the crash as a loose tyre which came off the front of the bus.

This then caused the driver of the bus to lose control of the vehicle resulting in the collision with the other vehicles.

At the time of the crash, the bus was following the van and both vehicles were heading to the Gulu side.

According to the Savannah region Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima, the truck was heading to the Kampala side.

He said one of the dead was the driver of the truck (names withheld) while the other fatality was a juvenile who was a passenger in the van.

“All victims were rushed to Kyinyogoga Hospital for treatment and the deceased were conveyed to Kyinyogoga mortuary for postmortem examination and all Vehicles were towed to Nakitoma police station pending IOV inspection,” he said.

The 2023 Annual Crime and Road Safety report shows that the number of reported incidents of road crashes increased by 16 per cent from 20,394 in 2022 to 23,608 in 2023. Out of the total crashes reported in 2023, at least 4,179 were fatal, 12,487 were serious and 6,942 were minor crashes.

The burden of road traffic deaths is largely borne by pedestrians, passengers on boda bodas and the riders themselves according to the Police.

To curb the alarming accident rates, the police said they had resorted to enforcement of traffic laws and regulations through operations, targeting commercial motorcycle riders, commuter passenger taxis, and other risk factors such as speeding and drunk driving.
