Uganda’s power distributor Umeme Ltd has clarified on planned shutdowns, assuring the public of "continued electricity supply throughout the festive season".

"December 2023 will have very few planned shutdowns," said Umeme's head of communications Peter Kaujju on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday.

"We have scheduled monthly shutdowns for maintenance work to ensure reliable supply of electricity," he said, adding that the list is circulated on the Umeme website.

For instance, the company says it will on December 5 carry out maintenance activities such as pole erection and dressing at Victoria High Bugumba, in Iganga district, in eastern Uganda.

The following day, Umeme will be carrying out the same activities in Kampala East, including Mbalala in Mukono district.

Umeme was reacting to an earlier story published by New Vision on Monday (November 27) about the planned shutdowns.

“Please be advised that in a bid to serve you better with reliable, safe and quality supply of electricity, we will have scheduled maintenance on our networks in the month of December 2023,” Umeme said on Monday.

For the earlier story, Kaujju told New Vision that the maintenance has been ongoing since October, and that the one of next month would be a continuation.
